Abstract

The dawn of Artificial Intelligence (AI) marks a paradigm modification in the educational landscape that offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance pedagogical practices, prepare students for a digitally driven world, as well as personalise learning. This lead paper comprehensively examined the emergence and intersection of AI innovation and pedagogical applications within the Nigerian and global educational context. Drawing upon a robust review from international and Nigerian scholars, the paper explores the theoretical foundations and underpinnings of AI in education. This included constructivism, connectivism, and self-determination theory. Critical challenges as well as issues confronting AI integration, such as infrastructural deficits, limited knowledge on digital literacy among educators, ethical challenges, academic integrity, data privacy, and digital divide, were examined. The paper further highlighted practical pedagogical applications of AI, ranging from intelligent tutoring systems and adaptive learning platforms to immersive simulations and automated assessment tools, with ultimate benefits for students, lecturers, universities, and society. Proposing a systemic framework, the paper professionally positions the teacher as a "Cognitive Facilitator," whose role evolves from disseminator of knowledge to custodian, instructor, and ethicist. It concluded with actionable recommendations for policy formulation, infrastructural investment, teachers’ professional development, and collaborative partnerships essential for harnessing AI's transformative potential while safeguarding the humanistic essence of education.
