ABSTRACT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology with significant potential to improve teaching, learning and practical skill development across Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), including Home Economics Education. This paper examined the role of AI in enhancing practical skill development in Home Economics Education by conceptualizing AI, Home Economics Education and practical skill development and discussing the application of AI in promoting personalized learning, virtual practical laboratories, practical competency development, continuous assessment, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and independent learning. The paper further explored AI as a driver of innovation through improved teaching effectiveness, learner engagement, flexible learning, industry relevance, digital competency and sustainable skills development. It also identified major challenges to AI integration, including inadequate ICT infrastructure, poor electricity supply, limited funding, lack of teacher competence, high implementation costs and curriculum limitations, while highlighting strategies such as curriculum revision, teacher capacity building, improved funding, digital infrastructure development, AI policy implementation, provision of smart laboratories and AI literacy for students. The paper concluded that the successful integration of AI into Home Economics Education would strengthen practical skill acquisition, enhance graduates' employability, promote entrepreneurship and innovation and contribute to sustainable national development.
