INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL LOCATION AND CLASS SIZE ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BASICTECHNOLOGY IN EDO STATE NIGERIA

Abstract

This study's primary goal was to ascertain how Edo State, Nigerian students' academic performance in basic technology was impacted by the location of the school and the size of the class. An ex-post facto, descriptive survey research design was chosen for the study. Using stratified and basic random sampling methods, 111 junior secondary school (JSS) pupils were selected from 61 of Edo State's 305 public secondary schools. The information gathered is based on student test results from 2016 to 2021 that were acquired from the Edo State Ministry of Education's Examination and Certificate Department.One-way analysis of variance and the independent t-test are two of the data analysis methods employed. The findings showed that junior secondary school (JSS) 111 pupils' academic performance was greatly improved by the impact of school location, with students outperforming their rural counterparts in fundamental technologies. Once more, the size of the class had a major impact on students' academic achievement. Among the recommendations are that, in order to promote effective learning, class numbers in schools should be kept short and that, for kids in rural areas who do not have access to urban life and educational opportunities, modern facilities and educational resources should be made available. Also, regardless of where they attend school (rural or urban), all basic technology students should have access to a conducive learning environment that includes things like large classrooms, well-equipped labs, accessible library resources, and recreational opportunities.
